Energy management policy

John Brown is committed to minimizing energy and water consumption and ensuring that our activities have the lowest possible environmental impact. In 2007, after an audit from the Carbon Trust, we implemented a series of measures that have successfully reduced our energy consumption by 14 per cent over a five-year period. FSC® accreditation

John Brown has held Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) www.fsc.org/ accreditation since 2007. The FSC® promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests. Papers that carry the chain-of-custody accreditation have a measurable supply chain that can accurately trace the timber used back to source and ensure that the forests are being sustainably managed. PEFC® accreditation

John Brown has held Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC®) http://www.pefc.co.uk/ accreditation since 2007. PEFC® is the world’s largest forest certification organisation, with two thirds of the world’s certified forest managed in compliance with PEFC®’s Sustainability Benchmark. PEFC® certification offers the widest supply of certified timber globally. PEFC® works throughout the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Thanks to its eco-label, consumers are able to identify paper products from sustainably managed forests. Our accreditation certificate can be viewed here: PEFC® accreditation

Carbon offsetting programme

Each year John Brown offsets the carbon emissions of its UK and South African businesses by purchasing Forest Credits from the Rainforest Concern charity www.rainforestconcern.org/projects/ecuador/ The donation is used to help protect and extend the Choco-Andean rainforest corridor in northwest Ecuador.
